In a remarkable show of unity and pride, the National Association of Old Students of Baptist High School, Saki (BHS), under the leadership of its National President, Deacon Sola Togunde, paid a courtesy visit to His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, on Wednesday, April 24, 2025.
The historic visit, which brought together alumni from various states across the country, was facilitated by members of the monarch’s 1992 graduating class at BHS. Despite his demanding schedule, the Alaafin warmly received the delegation after a brief wait, underscoring his enduring connection to his alma mater.
In his address, Deacon Togunde expressed profound gratitude to God for elevating one of their own to such a revered and culturally significant throne. He congratulated His Imperial Majesty on his ascension and committed him into God’s hands, praying for wisdom, strength, and divine guidance throughout his reign.
A key highlight of the visit was the presentation of symbolic gifts—a royal staff and an intricately crafted hand fan made from hide—by Professor Dejo Afolayan. In his remarks, Professor Afolayan encouraged the monarch to exercise magnanimity in leadership and foster unity among Yoruba traditional rulers, particularly with the Ooni of Ife. He also urged the Alaafin not to forget Baptist High School, Saki, which helped shape his leadership foundation.
In his heartfelt response, Oba Owoade expressed sincere appreciation to the delegation and reflected on the vital role BHS played in his moral and academic upbringing. He acknowledged that the school’s discipline and structure were instrumental in steering him towards a path of responsibility and excellence. The monarch pledged his continued support for the school and urged that he be invited to all major events hosted by the institution, reaffirming his commitment to its growth and development.
The visit concluded with a group photograph and a prayer led by an ordained minister among the alumni, invoking divine wisdom and strength for the Alaafin’s reign.
It was, indeed, a momentous occasion for Baptist High School, Saki—one that not only honored tradition but also celebrated the enduring legacy of education and leadership.
Gloria Semper Deo.
